Quote of the day - Humility

"Humility is the foundation of all the other virtues, hence,
in the soul in which this virtue does not exist, there cannot be any other virtue
except in appearance."

A message from Joe

As you will recall, group member Joe Massey was seriously injured in a workplace accident last month. On Jan. 20, 2010 Joe left the following message for the City Market Bible Study group. Hurry and get well Joe. We are all praying for a speedy recovery and quick rehabilitation. God bless you!

dear guys thanks alot for your thoughts and especially your prayers. Our Lord and savior Jesus Christ is so wonderful. As we all know there are so many surperlatives(sp)!Words like omnipresent, omnipotient, full of grace, full of mercy, loveing, kind, long suffering, able to save, and able to keep who he's saved throughout eternity!

He is so much more....He does so much more!Guys now that thats done"thanking and praiseing our God!Our Lord and savior Jesus Christ" I want to again say THANKS!

Thanks to: Chris(BTW Hows Helen?praying for her!),Tom,Mark,Mario,Gary,Walter(yes Walter I'm useing a cheat sheet:)and Tom.Also to anyone else whos prayed for me in regards to my injury.

The time at the bible is such a blessing. But to have people praying for you is just so awsome! My advice is If you've never accepted Jesus Christ into your heart do so without delay. If you have then get plugged in and stay plugged in.

I'm fortunate enough to have a church home. A great mentor who through him I've visited two other churches and they all have been praying for me too.

The bible says that God inhabits(sp?) the prayers of his saints! So make sure of your salvation, stay connected to Gods people. Then most of all stay plugged into God almighty through his son Jesus Christ. Through prayer, reading his word(the bible),telling other people about him,and by attending a local church!

Did'nt exactly mean to preach but its a carry over from last night.God is doing some really great things where I live.I believe,No I KNOW he actually showed up last night.Seed is beind planted, watered and God "our hope" will give the increase! Also friendships are being reconcilled(sp?).To God be the glory!

Guys by the grace of God I'll give Chris a call later. Thanks family and please keep praying for me.As mentioned there is the physical recovery.I'm praying that I have no problems with workmans comp now or the forseeable future.I'm praying I be able to go back to work one day.I have good attornys so I'm naturally praying for them, they're well geing and the handleing of my case. Finally a favorable decision wether through the courts or settlement. Of course Gods will be done not our own!

Thanks again and be encourged! To GOD be the glory! Amen!

January 20, 1020 Meeting

Our meeting was once again Spirit led as we tackled the controversial Hebrews 6:4-8 passage. Views were shared from the angles of the unpardonable sin to once saved always saved and all points in between. Next Wednesday, we will pick up at Hebrews 6:9. Also, continue to pray for Brother Joe as he recuperates from his horrible accident. He would also welcome phone calls as he is pretty much shut in for most of the time. He can be reached at 491-0671.

Yours in Christ,

Chris Cross

January 6th Meeting

Great meeting last Wed. We covered the first 10 verses of Chapter 5 of Hebrews. This portion of the book focuses on Christ as our high Priest, which would have had great meaning to the Hebrew audience of the book. Next meeting we will take up at verse 11 of Chapter 5, which serves as a lead in to the controversial first 6 verses of Chapter 6. Please join us if you can.

12-16-09 Meeting - Prayer request for Joe

During our last meeting we discussed Hebrews 4:12-13. This brief passage act as sort of a  parenthesis between the "God's rest" passage and the upcoming passage regarding Christ as our great high priest. We will start with 4:14 at the next meeting.

Please include group member Joe in your prayers. He was seriously injured in a work accident. His pelvis was broken in three places, but thanks to the Grace of God he was not more seriously injured or even worse. He should enjoy a complete recovery but it will be slow and painful. Joe, our prayers are with you - bless you.

Mel who?

In Hebrews Chapters 5, 6 and especially 7 the book refers to Christ as a High Priest of the order of Melchezidek. Just who is Melchezidek? Well, the Bible itself doesn't offer a lot of help.....or does it? Melchezidek is refered to briefly in the Bible, seemingly only in passing. While we will get into this a lot more as part of our study of Chapter 7, the following article on the Jewish traditions of Melchezidek are instructive:

Melchizedek in Jewish Tradition

The author of Hebrews uses the figure of Melchizedek to clarify the nature of the priesthood of Christ. Melchizedek, whose name means “king of righteousness” (Heb 7:2), appears briefly in Genesis as the king of Salem (Gen. 14:18-20). Despite being mentioned only in Genesis and one psalm (Ps. 110:4), the mystery of Melchizedek’s figure inspired much interpretive activity in Jerusalem during the second temple period.

Such intrigue was not lost on serious interpreters of the Old Testament in antiquity. Melchizedek emerges as the central figure in a fragmentary document found at Qumran. This document, entitled “11QMelchizedek”, consists largely of interpretive comments on Old Testament passages, and presents Melchizedek as an important figure in God’s judgment upon the earth in the end times.

Another fragmentary text, called “Melchizedek,” was Nag Hammadi in Egypt. It seemingly contains much older traditions from a group of Jews who found the origins of their theology in the person of Seth, the son of Adam born after Cain killed Abel (Gen. 4:25). In this tradition Melchizedek,”priest of God Most High,” receives special revelations concerning Jesus from heavenly messengers. In a second group of revelations Melchizedek himself becomes Jesus, and is both crucified and raised as savior! Such ideas make Jesus the new appearance of Melchizedek.

The author of Hebrews reads the Melchizedek tradition in a restrained manner compared to the speculations current at that time. Ultimately, he is not so much interested in Melchizedek, as in Christ who was the High Priest “according to the order Melchizedek” (Heb. 5:8-10). Christ’s heavenly priesthood surpasses an earthly priesthood of the king of Salem (Heb. 7:15-17)
